A Peer Mentor Is
- An outreach worker
- A motivator
- An ally and confidant
- A truth-teller
- A role model and mentor
- A planner
- A resource broker (links individuals/families to formal and indigenous sources of sober housing, recovery-conducive employment, health and social services)
- Recovery support (matches individuals to particular support groups/meetings)
- A tour guide (introduces newcomers into the local culture of recovery
- A helper to assist in orientation to recovery roles, rules, rituals, language and etiquette
- An advocate
- An educator
- A community organizer (helps develop and expand available recovery support resources)
- A guide that assists individuals and families to develop sobriety-based recovery
What is Peer to Peer?
Peer to Peer's purpose is to help individuals and families overcome everyday barriers through resources, support and guidance. A peer mentor is someone who can relate to the different situations and barriers one may face in early recovery All of our peer mentors use experiential knowledge and experiences to help each client in their journey.
Referrals
Referrals can be made by one of our assessment counselors after an assessment is completed. Individuals may also call our office to schedule an appointment or walk into our office during business hours.
Once a referral has been made, each client is matched with a peer mentor. The mentor will contact the client by phone to schedule meetings, which can happen at our office or out in the community. Meetings are generally scheduled once a week but can be adjusted as needed for each client.
At SACK our peer mentors respect your right to find your own recovery, whether that means through church, 12-step meetings, or other forms of support groups. We also realize that your recovery is dependent on your entire life, such as housing, your employment, children, legal issues, and transportation. Our peer mentors are here to guide and support you in and through each process.
Eligibility
Clients eligible for the services:
- Have an alcohol or drug problem
- Are not eligible for other case management services
- Are waiting to enter treatment
- Left during the course of treatment
- Have decided against entering treatment
Currently our treatment program is designed for adults over 18 and does not provide Bilingual or Hearing Impaired services. If a client requires these types of services, they will be referred to another provider.
