Sobering Unit

The Sobering Unit for persons with substance abuse issues: brief stay no longer than 23 hours. We offer recovery support and assist in accessing additional treatment services, including detoxification. SACK Sobering Unit accepts admissions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Eligibility

Referrals to the sobering unit are typically screened by telephone prior to admission to ensure proper placement, but drop-in consumers may be admitted if appropriate.

  • Must be intoxicated at the time of admission.
  • A Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) will be taken during intake. The consumer must have a BAC no higher than .30 and no lower than 0.04. If above or below these levels, the consumer will be referred to another facility.
  • Must be medically stable and ambulatory.
  • Must be free from suicidal, homicidal, or psychotic behavior.
  • The duration of stay is up to 23 hours based on intoxication levels. On average, consumers are in the sobering unit for 10 hours.

Detoxification Unit

The Adult Detoxification Unit is a non-medical facility that assists individuals safely through the process of detoxification from alcohol and drugs. SACK Detox accepts admissions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We believe that every individual deserves the opportunity for recovery.

Eligibility

Referrals to the detox unit are typically screened by telephone prior to admission to ensure proper placement, but drop-in consumers may be admitted if appropriate.

  • Must have used alcohol and/or drugs within 72 hours prior to admission and must be experiencing physiological symptoms of withdrawal from chemical substances or be in imminent danger of withdrawal.
  • Must be medically stable and ambulatory.
  • Those with suicidal, homicidal or psychotic behaviors will be referred to COMCARE's Crisis Services for further assessment.
  • Consumers on medications (including inhalers) will be accepted if the medications are in pharmacy labeled containers.

Services

  • Our services are designed to assist with the dangers and difficulties of detoxification from substances. Withdrawal symptoms are monitored and evaluated throughout the detox process, and consumers are referred for medical care when necessary.
  • Consumers will begin to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to manage substance dependence as a chronic illness.
  • Consumers will explore relapse triggers and develop plans to neutralize those triggers.
  • Consumers will gain familiarity with community support services.
  • An individualized discharge plan will be developed for each consumer.
  • We will assist in arranging aftercare services.
  • Each consumer receives a thorough assessment at admission to identify their recovery needs.
  • The duration of stay is based on the severity of symptoms and rate of progress. This is typically 3 to 5 days.

Fees:

There is no cost to Kansas residents for detox services.

Funding:

  • The Adult Detox Unit is supported in part by alcohol tax funds and fees from the Kansas Department for the Aging and Disability Services.

Licensed:

  • The Adult Detox Unit is licensed by Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services.
  • We are staffed with Licensed Addiction Counselors and Kansas Certified Peer Mentors.
